Read MoreFamous throughout the world, the Fontainebleau forest has inspired many artists, drawn by its rocky chaos with evocative shapes, its lights and its varied atmospheres.
Very popular, this forest offers a network of marked trails appreciated by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is also a recognized site for rock climbing and bouldering.
The first natural site in the world to benefit from a protective measure with the Barbizon Painters’ Reserves, the forest also constitutes a precious reservoir of biodiversity. This shelters a great diversity of environments and more than 1,200 animal and plant species.
Like all state-owned forests, this renowned Fontainebleau forest is managed by the National Forest Office: welcoming the public, environmental and landscape protection, forest management and wood exploitation … the challenges linked to the Fontainebleau forest are multiple! The foresters count on you to help them take care of it.The current massif is the result of the regrouping of the forests of Fontainebleau (to the east) and the Three Pignons (to the west), the forest of the Dame Jouanne (at South).
The Dame Jouanne massif offers varied landscapes of very high quality. Strangely shaped sandstone rocks, birches, oaks, pines emerge on a light-colored sandy soil, vast sandy beaches are the ingredients of the site of the Dame Jouanne forest frequented by walkers and climbers. There are also numerous traces left in the 105 caves and rock shelters of the Gulf of Larchant in the form of rock carvings.
