On 18 October 1903, the castle of Nemours (Seine-et-Marne) became a museum. This year, fortress celebrates 120 years since its transformation, a major celebration has been organised in this unique setting on 21 October 2023 to mark its anniversary.

A “dive into the city’s history

The event was an opportunity to launch the château’s new exhibition, “From Old Castle to Museum Castle”, on view until 25 February 2024. Photos, works of art and documents are on display, providing a real history lesson.

“This day and the new exhibition shed valuable light on a period about which we know very little,” Valérie Lacroute, the mayor of Nemours, told our colleagues, for whom the catle-museum has become a veritable emblem of the town. It’s a real plunge into the history of our town.”

A historic site still standing

During the celebration, the museum’s current director recalled some of the castle’s history. “2,000 people attended the inauguration, which was a very big event at the time,” he said.

The museum was founded by Justin-Chrysostome Sanson, its first director, Ernest Marché and Adolphe Ardail. Rodin had initially expressed an interest in taking over the premises with his works, before retracting his offer. All these pieces of history can be seen in the château until 25 February.
