The canton of Milly La Forêt is located south of Essonne and a few kilometers from the Seine and Marne.
Composed of six municipalities in the École valley and six other municipalities in the Essonne valley, The canton of Milly La Forêt is located in the heart of the Gâtinais Français Regional Natural Park and 52 km from Paris.
Milly La Forêt became from the middle of the XXth century a holiday resort for Parisians and artists, including Jean Cocteau and Christian Dior. The charming village is today an important tourist center of the department. Milly La Forêt holds the national conservatory of medicinal, aromatic and fragrant plants. Its tourism is natural and culturally rich.
Long hours walking around
Walk through the village of Milly La Forêt punctuated by explanatory panels leading you to the historical curiosities of Milly-la-Forêt. (French and English). The covered market, the dovecote, the Château de la Bonde, the washhouses, the drinking trough, the Porte du Moustier, the St Jacques cross, The ST Blaise des Singles chapel decorated by Jean Cocteau.
The Saint-Blaise-des-Simples Chapel
The garden located near the chapel recalls the tradition of growing medicinal plants in Milly. These plants, called the simple ones, were then used to relieve the suffering of lepers.
In 1959, Jean Cocteau, solicited by the city’s elected officials, decorated the interior of the chapel on the theme of the singles and the resurrection.
The Cyclop
A sculptural work in concrete, metal and partly covered with mirrors, tall as a seven-story building, sits in the heart of the Milly forest.
Jean Tinguely, his wife Niki de Saint Phalle and their friends started the construction site in 1969. Many artists collaborated, in a family and festive atmosphere. Without authorization and with their own money, they worked from recycled materials.
